1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser so it can remember things between visits — that you are signed in, which language you prefer. Similar technologies, like localStorage, store small pieces of data in the browser for the same purposes. This policy covers both, and applies to the StoryStepper website and web app. Our mobile apps use equivalent on-device storage.
2. The cookies and storage we use
Strictly necessary
These make the Service work. They cannot be switched off while you use StoryStepper, and no consent is required for them.
- Session cookie (
token): keeps you signed in and protects your account. Deleted or expired when your session ends. - Security: storage used to prevent fraud and abuse, for example during sign-in.
Preferences
- Language (
sl-ui-language): remembers the language you chose for the interface. - Theme: remembers whether you prefer the light or dark reading surface.
Analytics
- PostHog (keys prefixed
ph_): privacy-respecting product analytics that help us understand how the app is used — which features are read, where readers get stuck. Configured for product analytics, not advertising. Where applicable law requires consent for analytics storage, we ask before setting it, and you can change your mind at any time.
Payments
- Stripe and Link: when you buy on the web, checkout happens on pages operated by Stripe, with Link as the merchant of record. They set their own cookies there for payment processing and fraud prevention, under their own cookie policies.
3. What we do not use
No third-party advertising cookies. No cross-site tracking. No selling of data derived from cookies. There is no ad network anywhere in StoryStepper.
4. Your choices
- Consent: where the law requires it, we ask before setting analytics storage, and you can withdraw consent in the app settings at any time.
- Browser controls: every major browser lets you view, block, and delete cookies. Blocking the strictly necessary cookies will sign you out and parts of the Service will stop working.
- Deleting storage: clearing your browser's site data removes all of the storage listed above.
5. Changes to this policy
If we add or remove cookies, we update this page and the "Last updated" date at the top. If a change requires new consent, we will ask for it.
